Finding a job in Switzerland: the five-step method
Updated 4 October 2026
Five steps: know what to look for, pick 2-3 channels, triage each ad, adapt the pack, follow up and adjust. Details matter more than volume.
Step 1 — Target: occupation, region, activity rate
A search without these three filters produces useless alerts. Note the target occupation, the canton or cantons, and the rate (for example 80 % or 100 %). Other criteria come after.
Home location, commute time and permit are decided here, not when you send the pack. A B, C or G permit, or cross-border status, changes which roles you can answer. If that point is unclear, settle it before opening alerts.
Step 2 — Channels: 2 or 3, with precise alerts
Pick two or three channels, not a long list. The guide Where to look for a job in Switzerland: platforms, compared honestly compares Job-Room, jobs.ch, jobup.ch, LinkedIn, aggregators and career pages. Add the pages of employers you really target.
There is no single recipe by sector. A hospital, a workshop and an administration do not publish in the same places. Alerts reuse the occupation, canton and rate from step 1.
Step 3 — Triage before you apply
Every ad goes through the guide How to tell if a Swiss job ad is worth applying for?. The four questions are there: the framework fits you, the tasks look like work already held, the requirements are already in your CV, the text allows one concrete sentence.
A quick no is a gain. You keep time for an ad where the pack has traction.
Step 4 — Adapt the pack, without inventing
The guide How to adapt your CV to a Swiss ad without inventing experience? says what can change: order and wording, not facts. Keep the letter short. Usual Swiss documents (CV, letter, certificates) follow what the ad asks for, with no invented piece.
The employment reference is read separately. The guide How to read a Swiss employment reference (certificat de travail)? summarises article 330a CO and what a formula does not prove.
Step 5 — Follow up, nudge once, adjust
Keep a list: send date, channel, employer, status. One polite follow-up after 10 to 15 working days. Not a nudge every week.
If about ten seriously triaged packs bring no reply, change one parameter: the filters, the CV, or the channels. Sending more of the same pack does not fix the parameter.
What this method does not promise
No timeline, no number of interviews. The market changes with sector, language and permit. Two people following the same steps do not get the same result.
My Swiss Career is an assistant for deciding and preparing a pack. It is not a placement service.
